Mining Logistics is the process of planning and executing the efficient transportation and storage of goods from the point of origin to the point of consumption. Logistics aims to fulfill customer necessities in a timely, cost-effective manner. 

Mining sites are located where the minerals are, usually in remote areas. Reducing transportation costs is the single biggest challenge for the logistics industry since transportation constitutes a major chunk, about 30% of total expenses. But with increasing fuel prices, this can go up to 50%. In disparity, carrier pools are located where the people and industries are. It is common for the closest transport to a remote mine site to be 200 or more miles away unless a carrier is built distinctly to profit the mine. From extraction to delivery, mining firms serve different transportation modes, with the need for specialized equipment and expertise. However, this increases the risk of over-dependency on a few carriers and a lack of real-time visibility of different stages of the mine value chain.

Now, digitalized logistics aim to leverage road and rail capabilities to reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions and lower transport costs for customers. It also diverts freight currently shipped on road to multimodal combinations with the promise of more cost-effective end-to-end solutions. India's logistics cost as a percentage of its GDP is 14%, against 10% in America and Japan, and 11% for the European Union. The expense of moving steel in India is 2.3 times more than that in China. The Economic Survey of 2017-18 stated that a 10% reduction in indirect logistics costs might result in export growth of 5 to 8%. The government’s actions on improving logistics efficiency and the push on multimodal projects will help in lessening the logistics expenses. The multimodal sector comprises the movement of goods from one point to another and keeps track of ore movement from pit to ports/plants.
